Summertime and water seem to go hand in hand, don’t they? Although those of us living in The Bahamas can certainly enjoy our time in the breathtakingly azure blue waters that surround our islands, something we need to consider with the excessive heat that is raging this summer is staying well hydrated without adding to the waste from disposable plastic water bottles.
Far too many of us say we will drink the required amount of water to maintain our hydration level; yet do we? Doctors and researchers now say we should be consuming at least 1 ½ – 2 quarts of fluids daily to maintain a healthy level of hydration. This amount will change if you are outside for long periods of time, if you are sweating more from increased activity levels, or after alcohol consumption. Time Magazine reports “that 40% of all beer sold in the US is consumed from May to August”. We need to pay attention, step up to the plate and get hydrated.
I realize many people will say they don’t want to drink “the awful tap water”, or that bottled water is too costly. Do we actually consider when we grab that water bottle from the shelf how we are adding to the pollution worldwide? Or the fact that many bottling companies mislead us about the source of their water? To quote The Responsibility Project by Liberty Mutual “according to a Scientific American article, bottled water is ripping off consumers to the tune of 1900 times the cost of tap water, and bottlers aren’t revealing where their water comes from: “…18 percent of the 173 bottled waters on the U.S. market today fail to list the location of their source; a third disclose nothing about the treatment or purity of the water inside their plastic bottles.”
With the internet at our hands, it is up to us to do the research needed to become better informed for ourselves and our families.
There are many various different kinds of water filtration systems on the market that are easy to use and cost effective. For example, there are new sleek designs such as the “Bobble Jug”. http://www.waterbobble.com/jug.html
Britta puts out a pitcher as well as a 20 ounce, dishwasher safe water bottle that use changeable filters.
The company Pur makes an excellent faucet mount filter you can use to fill up any thing from a glass to a saucepan. http://www.purwater.com/pur-products.html#FaucetWaterFilters
So let’s make this summer not only a fun summer, let’s make it a healthy, and HYDRATED one!
